Middle School is the time to begin thinking about the many choices of high schools your child has and what you and your child need to do to prepare. Below is some information to help you in your planning. For the most part, links to websites are provided so that you can go directly to the source in case any changes are made to scheduling or processes. We encourage you to visit these sites often for the most updated information.

TACHS Exam (Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools)

If your child is thinking of going to a Catholic high school, he/she will need to take the TACHS exam. Information regarding the TACHS exam can be found on the link below. Please pay special attention to the timeline on this site so that you can register your child in a timely manner. The sooner you register, the more apt you are to get your preferred testing site as the test is administered in various locations. The site below will provide you with all the information you need regarding the TACHS exam. You should check this site often for updates and/or changes to any information.

TACHS Preparation
Our Lady of Sorrows School conducts a TACHS review class in the fall for 8th graders who will be taking the test. This is a review class of math and grammar topics that may be on the exam. This class is held at Our Lady of Sorrows School and is taught by OLS teachers. Registration forms will be sent to 8th grade families in September.

Open Houses

All of the Catholic high schools conduct open houses in the fall. This is a great opportunity for students to visit schools and meet teachers and an opportunity for parents to ask questions about programs, academics, etc.

It is never too early to start this process. Seventh grade students are encouraged to visit schools during open houses in the fall of 7th grade so they have ample time to explore their options.

Spend A Day

When you have narrowed down your top choice(s) of high schools that are appropriate for your child, it is very beneficial for your child to spend a day at that school(s). This gives your child an opportunity to experience a typical day at that school and may help them in making a decision. These visits are for the student only and must be scheduled with the high school. It is advisable to schedule these visits as soon as possible as dates will fill up. Contact the high school directly for more information.

In addition, some schools have Open Campus days for parents. This gives parents the opportunity to experience a typical day. Each high school has different policies, so check directly with each high school for more information.

Regis High School is a tuition free Jesuit college preparatory school for boys. Admission is highly competitive. Those who meet the criteria will be notified and may submit an application (due two weeks before the exam) and then take the Regis Scholarship Exam. The Regis exam is the High School Placement Exam (HSPT) not the TACHs.

There are also many non-denominational private schools in our area. Most have their own application, interview and testing process and timeline. Information on these schools can be found on their websites.

Scholarship Tests

Private schools do offer some financial based and some academic based scholarships. Each school has its own method and criteria for awarding such scholarships. Please research this information on the school’s website or speak to an admissions director at the school.

Honors Classes in High School

Each school has its own set of criteria for placement in honors and advanced classes. These criteria change from time to time. For the most accurate and timely information, please check directly with each school.

Pre-High School Summer Programs

Many high schools offer summer programs for students the summer before 8th grade (some are also open to students the summer before 7th grade). These programs have an academic portion and an athletic portion. Some of these programs prepare students to take the TACHs in the fall of 8th grade.
